RENT, Award Winning Rock Musical, Set to Capture Houston Audiences in August

See the 20th anniversary of the touring production with Broadway at the Hobby Center

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world.

And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production.

A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love.

HISTORY OF RENT

This rock musical complete with lyrics, music, and a book by Jonathan Larson is loosely based on La Bohème. The story of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan’s East Village is the focus in the Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.

First seen in a workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1993, RENT moved to Broadway’s larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.

Once on Broadway,  it won several awards including the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after 12 years and grossed over $280 million.

In 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members.
