New Documentary SHINE Illuminates the Life of a Beloved Third Ward Icon

In a city known for its resilience and heart, one man’s quiet legacy is stepping into the spotlight. SHINE, a powerful new documentary from Houston-based Grand Rio Entertainment, tells the inspiring story of Mike Straughter, the humble yet extraordinary owner of Chase Shoe Shine Parlor in Houston’s historic Third Ward.

For over two decades, Mike has done more than polish shoes – he’s polished spirits. His one-man shop has become a sanctuary of kindness, conversation, and community. From city leaders to longtime neighbors, everyone who walks through his doors is treated with dignity, warmth, and a listening ear.

SHINE is about more than one man’s story,” says Tracey Satterwhite, Director and Producer at Grand Rio Entertainment. “It’s about how everyday acts of kindness can ripple through a community and change lives. Mike is a living example of how one person’s light can brighten an entire neighborhood.”

The film features heartfelt interviews with Mike, loyal customers, and community leaders who share how his generosity and grassroots spirit have helped knit the fabric of the Third Ward. From providing shoes to the homeless to giving back to local children, Mike’s impact is immeasurable – is now being celebrated on the big screen.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Houston Blue Santa, a cherished local initiative that brings holiday joy to children and families in need.  There are 25 tickets available for sale as of 11-3-25 and are $16 plus service fees. Get tickets here.
