Houston Texans Celebrate Another Successful Season of Huddle Against Hunger, presented by Kroger
On Tuesday, May 18, Houston Texans, Kroger and Houston Food Bank hosted a special scavenger hunt event with students from J. Ruth Smith Academy Elementary School as a year-end celebration of another successful season of the Huddle Against Hunger curriculum.
Thirty, fifth-grade students (ages 9-11) from the school brroke into teams of 5 and participate in the scavenger hunt at Kroger on Buffalo Speedway. The teams received a Texans-decorated shopping cart and a list of items to find in the store which includes foods that tie back to the Huddle Against Hunger curriculum and are nutrient-packed to help foster good grocery shopping habits. The teams was cheered on by TORO, Texans Legend Matt Murphy, Kroger’s Big K mascot, Kroger team members and the Texans Cheerleaders!
At the end of the event, a Houston Texans Legend Matt Murphy surprised the students with the news that each of them will go home with a Kroger gift card, Huddle Against Hunger lanyard and certificate and Texans goody bags!
“At Kroger, the fight against hunger is something we are passionate about, in fact, we have a goal to end hunger in our communities by 2025 through our Zero Hunger Zero Waste initiatives,” says Joe Kelley, President of Kroger Houston. “Huddle Against Hunger has allowed us to engage our valued partnerships with the Houston Texans and Houston Food Bank, providing educational resources to young students across Houston on the many aspects of hunger and nutrition. I’m thrilled that this program is making an impact on today’s young minds as we work to break the cycle of food insecurity.”
As an added bonus, all food collected during the scavenger hunt will be donated to the Houston Food Bank.
Huddle Against Hunger is a free curriculum designed to provide educational resources on the topics of hunger and poverty to elementary, middle and high school students. It is a partnership between Houston Texans and Houston Food Bank, and generously presented by Kroger.
