JW Marriott Houston Downtown Expansion and Enhancement Set to Transform Historic Department Store
As the global spotlight turns to 2026 FIFA World Cup host cities, the JW Marriott Houston Downtown is preparing to add some fresh star power to the region’s luxury hospitality scene with a landmark, multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation. Set in the heart of Downtown at 806 Main, immediately south of the future Main Street Promenade, the hotel and surrounding neighborhood will unveil a bold new vision in early 2026 — perfectly timed to welcome guests from around the world.

The hotel transformation includes the reinvention of the historic Battelstein’s Building at adjacent 812 Main. A cornerstone of Houston’s rich retail legacy, the former department store debuted at the site in 1924, and under the direction of famed local architect, Joseph Finger, ultimately reached its current 10 story height in 1950. In November 2022, the property was acquired by current hotel ownership, the Nashville and San Diego-based privately held real estate investment company, Southwest Value Partners.
The expansion creates a seamless integration with the 22-story Samuel F. Carter Building, the 1910 Beaux Arts architectural treasure rechristened as the JW Marriott Houston Downtown in 2014.

Combined, the structures will feature a total of 384 guest rooms (an increase of 56), including 89 suites, creating the largest inventory of luxury accommodations in Houston’s historic core. The reimagined hotel will also launch 10,000 square feet of additional meeting and event spaces (bringing the total to approximately 23,500), a redesigned ground floor restaurant and lounge, plus a chic, rooftop space showcasing a bar, restaurant and pool with skyline views. These assets join an existing full-service spa, state-of-the-art fitness center and expansive executive club lounge.
“This initiative represents an exciting evolution for the JW Marriott Houston Downtown,” said Jelle Vandenbroucke, General Manager. “We are not just adding rooms — we are redefining the guest experience by creating a hospitality destination that captures the energy, diversity and sophistication of Houston.”
Director of Sales & Marketing Misty King added, “The addition of the rooftop pool and restaurant not only provides a high-end amenity and attraction for our guests, but also becomes a chic destination for locals.”
In addition to introducing stylish spaces and functional amenities that will further elevate the hotel’s appeal for conferences, events and leisure stays, the project also marks the first major refresh since opening.
Guests can expect a blend of natural materials, refined finishes and contemporary elegance that pay homage to the architectural heritage of the joined sites. Upon completion, the JW Marriott Houston Downtown will stand as both a modern luxury destination and a tribute to Houston’s architectural legacy.
