New York Times bestselling author George Saunders, born in Amarillo, Texas and raised in Oak Forest, Illinois, is “a true original” whose work is “unflinching, delightful, adventurous, compassionate,” according to Folio Prize judge Lavinia Greenlaw. He is author of 12 books, including the novel Lincoln in the Bardo, winner of the Booker Prize. His story collection Tenth of December won the Folio and Story Prizes, and in 2025, he received the National Book Award for Distinguished Contributions to American Letters, a lifetime achievement award.

His honors include MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships, and he was named one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2013. His bestselling A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life shares a version of what he has taught to his MFA students at Syracuse University for more than 20 years. Through his popular Substack “Story Club with George Saunders,” he extends his love of teaching, storytelling, and the craft of writing to the general public.
Saunders returns to Inprint with his new novel Vigil, which takes place at the bedside of an oil company CEO, in the twilight hours of his life, as he is ferried from this world into the next – and, in the process, spins a tale that encompasses life and death, good and evil, and the thorny question of absolution.
The series is presented in association with Brazos Bookstore and the University of Houston Creative Writing Program.
