Loose Cannon Makes Debut in Spring Branch
There’s a new port to pull into for those seeking a blend of casual atmosphere and craft cocktails. Loose Cannon is here.
The new bar, brought to life by Russell and Liz Thoede, founders of the acclaimed tiki bar Lei Low, and Brad Moore, the brains behind Big Star Bar and Grand Prize Bar is located in the heart of Spring Branch in the space that was formally Mickey’s, Robbie’s, and Might As Well Lounge. The Thoedes promise the new spot will keep its easy neighborhood dive vibe even as it elevates the cocktail menu and atmosphere.
When guests walk through the wooden blue door they’re immediately submersed into a space of dark blue walls hung with nautical flotsam and jetsam, including ship’s wheels, maritime-themed art chrome accented lights that could be off a submarine or freighter ship. The fixtures above the bar are Mid-Century designs that Russell gave a brass sheen that offer a nod to the days of Clipper ships and sea shanties.
“It’s like the bar across the street from the harbor,” said Russell about Loose Cannon’s vibe.
“For us somehow, nautical and dive bar just meshed,” echoed Liz.
Expect a menu that’s heavy with rum and rum-laced cocktails, in addition to a full bar that can create all the guests’ favorites. The signature cocktail is a play on the French 75. Called the Loose Cannon, it blends Jamaican rum, cognac, lemon juice, simple syrup and sparkling wine. There are also drinks like a coconut gin and tonic, and the Sazerac, along with cask strength rum.
“There’s a whole nautical history in rum,” said Russell, who is a certified Rummelier (think a sommelier who specializes in rum). “And we have a Painkiller and a frozen Hurricane. But this is not tiki. It’s sort of like the other side of rum. A little more rum, but really sort of a good selection of all spirits.”
The couple had been looking to expand their own bar business for a few years, and saw an opportunity with this space. They’ve done the renovations themselves, from the wood floor to the shelves Russell built. They added another well behind the bar, which they feel will make service more efficient for bartenders and guests alike. And they stress that those who’ve loved the bar in its former iterations will feel at home, still able to order their favorite beer or spirit, even as they try something new.
“We wanted the same escapist vibe that you have at a tiki bar, where you walk in and it transports you to another place, another era, where you feel like you’re somewhere else,” said Russell.
Houston drinkers should prepare for adventures ahead.
