Houston Arboretum hosts Spring Plant Sale on March 11-12
Plants will help attract birds, bees and butterflies
Visitors can find nearly 60 beautiful species of plants native to the region from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.
All flowers, plants and shrubs sold at the plant sale are sourced from local growers. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Arboretum’s conservation and education efforts. Plant sizes range from one quart up to five gallons.
These plants can be integrated into ecological landscaping, which is in tune with the local environment and utilizes each site’s unique characteristics for maximum form and function. This type of planting also minimizes the use of renewable and non-renewable resources, such as water, organic materials, lumber, concrete and fossil fuels.
Pollination is a benefit of planting ecologically, so birds, bees and butterflies will be attracted to the native plants, which are more resilient to drought, floods, and freezing temperatures. If you lost a sago palm or ginger during this past winter’s freeze, then consider native plants.
When it comes to the reproductive success of plants and flowers, pollination is nearly as important as sunlight and soil. Healthy gardens need to be visited by pollinators in order to flourish.
Some of the plants for sale this year include, Arrowood Viburnum, Blue Sage, Common Persimmon, Coral Sage, Esperanza, Frog Fruit, Hibiscus, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Red Indigo, Strawberry Bush, Texas Coneflower and Wild Indigo.
