Tony Award winner, In the Heights, kicks off TUTS season
Kicking off the 2016-2017 season for Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) is the Tony Award winning production from Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights showing at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts until September 25, 2016.
Miranda, the genius behind the game-changing Hamilton: An American Musical, took In the Heights to audiences and was nominated for 13 Tony Awards. The show received five Tony Awards including Best Musical. It also captured a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and was nominated for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
In the Heights is an animated snapshot of three days in the eclectic Dominican-American neighborhood, Washington Heights in New York City, as the residents face the changes and challenges of a world that is on the move.
The TUTS production will be directed by Nick DeGruccio, who most recently directed the Los Angeles premiere of First Date, and has a lauded history of direction on the West Coast. In The Heights choreography is by Jose-Luis Lopez whose performance credits include, most recently, On Your Feet! and the Broadway and touring productions of In The Heights. Lopez will be recreating the original highly praised choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler. The scenic and costume design for this production will also be based on that of the original Broadway production.
