FOUR HOUSTON-AREA NONPROFITS RECEIVE 8,000 POUNDS OF PET FOOD DONATED BY ‘I AND LOVE AND YOU’ FOR LOCAL DISTRIBUTION IN PREPARATION FOR WINTER WEATHER

Houston PetSet, a local nonprofit organization working to end Houston’s homeless animal crisis, joined area partners Corridor Rescue Inc., Rescued Pets Movement, and Interfaith Ministries’ aniMeals on Wheels to disseminate more than 8,000 pounds of dog and cat food donated by ‘I and love and you’ on Friday, December 8, 2023.

The pet food company, based in Boulder, Colorado, selects a rescue each month to be their featured shelter, and Corridor Rescue was selected for the month of December. Houston K911 Rescue and #TeamFeral received Houston PetSet’s portion of the donation to benefit the cats and dogs waiting for rescue on the streets of Houston.

With so much food to distribute, Corridor Rescue reached out to their partners to make sure that communities across the region could benefit. The large wet and dry food delivery was made at Starshine Texas, an event center that generously and routinely supports animal welfare, and the groups coordinated a pick-up time to help load the incredible amount of donations. The timing couldn’t be better, with cold weather finally headed to the region and to pets in need of support.

“We are so thankful to have Partners in Rescue like ‘I and love and you’ from Boulder Colorado,” said Jeff Hoke, Vice President of Corridor Rescue, Inc. “Their hearts to donate 11 pallets of food to the Houston area rescue scene will make a huge impact this holiday season as we can now add free food distribution to the residents in need who try their best to take care of their animals. The remainder will be used to feed strays to keep them as healthy as possible until the Houston rescue community can try to save them.”

HMNS hosts viewing for “ring of fire” solar eclipse, happening Oct 14

Millions of people in the Western Hemisphere will experience a wondrous celestial event on Saturday, October 14: an annular “ring of fire” solar eclipse. But it won’t burn, burn, burn at HMNS as they’ve got you covered to safely enjoy this unique event, the last annular solar eclipse to be visible from the United States until 2039!

Beginning at 10:00am on October 14 – outside on the HMNS front plaza sundial for some special crafts and activities to learn more about the eclipse, and inside our Burke Baker Planetarium for free mini-shows every 15 minutes from 10:30 am through noon that show simulations and demonstrate the rare conditions that cause eclipses.

While here in Houston we will see a deep partial eclipse (a “sun crescent”) with about 84% of the sun covered, the Planetarium will broadcast a live stream from Bandera, Texas (located west of San Antonio and directly within the path of annularity) showing the “ring of fire.” HMNS visitors will be able to safely view and track the eclipse using filtered viewing cards, telescopes, and sun spotters; watch some solar-powered toys and sun cookers in action; take part in fun crafts like creating usable sundials and cereal box eclipse viewers; and much more. HMNS will keep you safe, informed, and entertained for the whole event.

Astronomers will be on hand to guide the activities and discuss what makes this annular solar eclipse different from the upcoming total solar eclipse, happening April 8, 2024.

Entrance into the Burke Baker Planetarium for the free mini-shows is on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit hmns.org to stay up-to-date on information related to the eclipse and HMNS event.

HOME RUN DUGOUT SWINGS FOR THE FENCES AND BREAKS GROUND ON FIRST FULL-SCALE STANDALONE LOCATION

Exclusive-to-Market Baseball-Centric Entertainment and Dining Concept Slated to Open in Early 2023

Home Run Dugout, a sports-meets-entertainment concept brought to life by native Texan founders Nick Hermandorfer and Tyler Bambrick in 2016, hit a “grand slam” on June 6, 2022 during a groundbreaking ceremony of its newest facility, introducing a fun, community-oriented activation that will welcome residents from all over the Houston-area. Slated to open in Katy in early 2023, this marks the first stand-alone location of its kind in the United States and will be the flagship location for customers to experience Home Run Dugout’s patented Batting Bay™ technology.

Occupying 46,000 square feet of space, Home Run Dugout will offer a unique and unforgettable experience for guests of all ages with its twelve Batting Bays™ which feature soft-toss pitching machines suitable for sluggers of all skill levels; a dog park; and a biergarten baseball™ mini-field complete with stadium lights perfect for evening play or a Dinger Derby™.

Ballplayers can take a break from the fun to enjoy the full-service restaurant and patio, offering both indoor and outdoor dining options. While enjoying live music on the facility’s concert stage, fans can browse the scratch kitchen menu featuring elevated ballpark cuisine. But first, brunch! The inclusive menu is also set to hit a home run with brunch-goers serving a variety of savory and sweet options. Then, close out the inning – or the night – with a cold beverage from Home Run Dugout’s two bars or the Biergarten’s well-rounded selection of more than 12 “mostly local” craft beers on tap, wine and curated cocktails.

Home Run Dugout is living proof of a motivated and intelligent duo who set out to bring their dreams to reality – and they did! After bootstrapping the concept themselves and working in “stealth-mode” for a number of years while they secured patents on the concept, the dynamic duo traveled to nearly a dozen baseball parks and worked in garages and warehouses to ensure the concept would combine not only their love for the game but also the social aspect of America’s pastime. In 2019, Hermandorfer and Bambrick opened their first location in Dell Diamond stadium, home to the Round Rock Express, which gave way to plans for this new location in Katy.

“We could not be happier to have officially broken ground on this long-awaited project in Katy,” said co-founder Nick Hermandorfer. “All of the best ideas come out of left field, so we wanted to create something that captures the spirit of left field – a place where anything is possible – which led to the development of Home Run Dugout. To add, we feel certain that our new location in Katy will bring together the community, and tourists alike, to enjoy an unmatched interactive experience,” added co-founder Tyler Bambrick.

The Women’s Fund for Health Education and Resiliency Hosts 7th Annual Wine Dinner

The aroma of rich and harmonious wine along with culinary delights and entertainment united more than 200 supporters and guests on the vine for The Women’s Fund for Health Education and Resiliency and its 7th Annual Wine Dinner at Tony’s on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

The Wine Dinner, presented by The Durdin Family and Parkway Family Chevrolet, Mazda and Kia, raised more than $205,000 to ensure Houston-area women and girls have free access to tools they need to be advocates for their health through classes, workshops, lectures, and publications focused on physical, mental, financial, emotional, health, and wellness.

The Wine Dinner began with sounds of soft jazz by the Houston Ensemble and a reception of passed crab cakes and Beef Wellington along with NV Francois Labet Brut Cremant De Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Dinner chimes ushered guests to their tables, as KHOU-11’s Great Day Houston host Deborah Duncan welcomed guests and introduced President of the Board Jillian Nel who highlighted The Women’s Fund programs that provide a safe haven for girls and women, and the commitment to continue providing classes, presentations, and publications free of charge to communities with limited access to health information.

Nel thanked sponsors and introduced Co-chairs: The Durdin Family, Jean Durdin, Sharilyn and Gayle Lampson, Erin and Forbes Durdin, Granger Durdin and Heather Oglesby. Lampson was welcomed to the podium and shared why The Women’s Fund’s mission is so important to her and her family. Wine Dinner guests also heard testimony from Nelly Argueta-Solórzano, LMSW, a Wraparound Resource Specialist at Piney Point Elementary School. Argueta-Solórzano has witnessed the power and impact The Women’s Fund classes, workshops and publications make on young girls who face challenging circumstances.

Dinner was a feast for the eyes and palate accented by floral décor by Shaina Park with Heyday Flowers and the exquisite four-course meal with wine pairings.

Silent auction sponsor David Peck created a friendly bidding war among the Wine Dinner guests who took a fancy to dining, entertainment, travel, luxury items and experiences. Peck also fulfilled the thrill of giving back with 12 mystery bags curated with his merchandise and gift certificates that were available for purchase. While guests placed their bids, the entertainment continued, and the much-anticipated live auction followed.

Ford v. Ferrari Race Cars to Headline Keels and Wheels 2021

Keels and Wheels 25th Anniversary Concours d’Elegance is pleased to announce that the cars from the movie Ford v. Ferrari will be headlining their event this year.

Ford v. Ferrari is an Academy Award winning sports drama that depicts the journey to the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. The trio of Ford GT40’s beats the previously dominant Ferrari team.

The Ken Miles Hero Car GT40 Mark II Replica, from the Michael & Kimberly Newman collection, is the true star of the movie. The Replica emulates details of the original vehicle, including the amazing jet-black interior design. The GT40 is powered by a Roush 427 1R V-8 engine and employs a rear-exit “Bundles of Snakes” exhaust. The famous 1966 blue livery is emblazoned with a bold number “1” in homage to the legendary GT40 that is now showcased at the Shelby Heritage Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Ferrari 330 P3 #27 was a stunt car used in the high-speed passes in Ford v. Ferrari. The Ferrari was built to be a racing car (not just a movie prop) by Billy Stabile, President of the Hollywood Car Company, and Race Car Replicas of Michigan. This stunning replica shines in crimson glory with 625 Horsepower and weighs only 2,300 pounds. The punishment that these vehicles underwent in the 24 Hours of LeMans race is visible in the gritty painting detail.

25th Annual Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance will be held at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook on May 1-2, 2021.

Ancient Hauntings: Archaeology Now presents “The First Ghost Stories”

To Be Held on Saturday, October 31 at 3 p.m.

Just in time for Halloween, Archaeology Now, the Archaeological Institute of America – Houston Society, is exploring the first ghost stories with Dr. Irving Finkel, the assistant keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian Script at The British Museum.

In this illustrated talk, Dr. Finkel will discuss how the near-universal belief in ghosts goes back since the beginning of time; and reveal how the oldest known writing, in cuneiform script on tablets of clay, gives us a full picture of the ancient Mesopotamian ghost experience: who might be expected to be a ghost, how to keep the dead happy in the Netherworld, how to banish annoying ghosts that keep appearing, and how to summon the dead to come back and disclose the future.

No one need be frightened!

The lecture is FREE and available via Zoom: https://youtu.be/vHUNNVG3pbk.

The National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredricksburg to Offer Limited, Guided Visits Beginning May 15

Phase I of plan to gradually reopen museum

As part of its efforts to carefully reopen the museum, the National Museum of the Pacific War’s phased approach will begin with guided visits for groups of up to nine persons beginning May 15. These visits must be reserved, in advance, on the museum’s website. A limited number of tours will be offered Wednesday through Sunday weekly.

The small, socially-distanced experiences will give the feel of a “private tour.” Each tour will run approximately two and a half hours and will include both the recently renovated Admiral Nimitz Gallery and the George H.W. Bush Gallery. Museum guides are knowledgeable about exhibits and features of the museum and can answer questions throughout. The 9:00 A.M. reservation times will be exclusively for museum members.

The museum is following precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as well as national and state guidelines to ensure both staff and guests have a safe, enjoyable visit. As a safety precaution, face masks must be worn by all museum staff and are required of those who participate in the guided visits inside the museum building. Disposable masks will be provided for visitors who do not bring their own. Touchless hand-sanitizer dispensers will be available throughout the museum. The limited schedule of tours allow enough time for sanitizing in between groups.

“We are looking forward to greeting visitors back to the museum, albeit in a much smaller capacity in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved. These small-group visits are a wonderful way to get an enriching museum experience that is perfect for first-timers and returning guests alike,” said National Museum of the Pacific War Director, Rorie Cartier.

To reserve space, go to www.pacificwarmuseum.org/visit/buy-tickets. or call (830) 997-8600.

To experience more of what the museum has to offer virtually from home, check out new episodes of Nimitz Minitz every Tuesday and Thursday and Highlights and Insights of the Pacific War every Wednesday posted on the museum’s Youtube channel. Plus, new Facebook live streams every Friday and other online resources for distance learners.

HOUSTON BALLET NUTCRACKER MARKET SPRING CANCELS SHOPPING EVENT

Second Annual Spring Market Fundraiser Canceled Amid Development of Coronavirus (COVID-19), Plans for Online Marketplace in the Works

Following the recommendations from the City of Houston and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market SPRING has decided to cancel their shopping fundraiser scheduled for April 17-19 at NRG Center, due to the development of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The event was set to bring 160 merchants from across the country to NRG Center. Along with the annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market held in November, Nutcracker Market SPRING is a fundraiser that allows shoppers to give back to the Houston Ballet Foundation, its Academy and scholarship programs.

“We are deeply saddened to cancel our Spring shopping event,” said Patsy Chapman, CEO of the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market. “However, the ever-changing situation regarding COVID-19 has proven too risky for the health, safety and welfare of our shoppers, merchants, committee members, sponsors, volunteers and staff. This is the right decision to keep our community safe and healthy.”

Customers who have already purchased tickets to the event are eligible to receive full refunds.  Visit NutcrackerMarket.com for more information on all ticket refund options. The deadline is June 30.

In an effort to help out the small businesses affected by the cancellation of this event and other similar events around the country, the Nutcracker Market staff is currently in the planning stages of creating a “virtual marketplace” Facebook group, where participating merchants can showcase their products, allowing customers the opportunity to shop for merchandise from the comfort of their homes. One hundred percent of sales from the virtual market will go directly to the merchants.

The Nutcracker Market staff aims to have the virtual market in place and available to shoppers by March 25. More information will be announced on the Nutcracker Market website and their social media pages once details are confirmed.

The free event gives children and youth with disabilities from Galveston and Harris counties a chance to be creative in a safe and fun environment while allowing them to explore interactive art stations and live entertainment in the gardens.

Students and their chaperones will be able to enjoy booths set up by local artists and organizations, and use adaptive art equipment for individuals in walkers and wheelchairs, to learn about the importance of art.

“Our goal with this event is to provide students with a hands-on experience,” Moody Gardens Volunteer Coordinator Molly Willems said. “We want them to be able to celebrate and share creativity through participatory experiences, performances and more,” adding that it is always exciting to see the expressions of joy on the participants’ faces as they create their works of art.

The Hope Therapy Program was established by the Moody Foundation in 1986, changing the lives of thousands of people since its inception. Other Hope Therapy events include the Mardi Gras for Special People and the Adaptive Water Sports Festival.

Those wishing to participate need to RSVP by Sept. 13. For more information please visit www.moodygardens.org.  To RSVP, please call 409-683-4108 or email volunteers@moodygardens.com.

Buffalo Bayou in Bloom

Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP)’s Young Professional group, Bayou Buddies, are hosting Buffalo Bayou in Bloom, a new fundraising soirée that celebrates springtime at Buffalo Bayou Park. Hurricane Harvey deposited 78,000 cubic yards of silt that damaged hundreds of native plants and trees last August.

With time, help from volunteers and favorable weather, we’re finally seeing life return to Buffalo Bayou. However, monetarily, we still have quite a way to go to restore Houston’s favorite urban greenspace. This fundraising event will benefit BBP’s efforts for continual revitalization of Buffalo Bayou and help keep Buffalo Bayou blooming.

With a stunning view of downtown Houston and expansive lawn with stage, attendees will enjoy:

  • Light bites provided by Raising Cane’s, Steel City Pops and Tiff’s Treats (to name a few)
  • Libations from Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, Agricole Hospitality, Saint Arnold Brewing Company and Bayou Rum, who created a themed “Bayou Blossom” cocktail
  • Live music from local artists curated by local record label, Splice Records (Arthur Yoria, Ancient Cat Society and Will Van Horn Trio)
  • The chance to bid at a silent auction on everything from an Electra bicycle to wine tastings to giftcards from renowned Houston businesses
  • A photo exhibit sponsored by Yelp Houston featuring breathtaking photos of iconic Buffalo Bayou destinations by Yelp members
  • Giveaways from Katz Coffee and Bumble

Details:  Thursday, April 26 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at The Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park (105 Sabine Street). Tickets are $30 for members/$40 for non-members (pre-sale) +$10 more at the door. This event is also pet-friendly for those four-legged friends on a leash!

Another new addition to the Thanks for the Memories exhibit are a pair of hiking boots worn by Robin Williams in the movie RV, where he delivers in a hilarious and jaw-dropping comedy as the role of Bob Munro, the patriarch of a dysfunctional family.

Wizard of Oz fans will appreciate the salute to Meinhardt Frank Raabe, famous for his role as a Munchkin coroner who certified the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, as well as his longtime position as a spokesperson for Oscar Mayer.
