Susan G. Komen Houston and Houston BCycle Launch “Pedal for the Cure”

Local nonprofits kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with pink bikes and donation campaign

Susan G. Komen® Houston and Houston BCycle have partnered together to launch “Pedal for the Cure,” a campaign designed to encourage personal wellness among Houstonians while raising awareness of Komen Houston’s mission to save lives and end breast cancer.

To promote the campaign and encourage participation, two bright-pink Komen-branded BCycles are joining the city’s bike share 475-bike fleet.

Available for the public to rent and ride, the pink bikes encourage active travel and provide a call-to-action to donate to Komen Houston. Additionally, participants who rent one of the pink bikes can enter to win free BCycle memberships by posting a photo to social media and using the hashtag #PedalForTheCure.

Houstonians can participate in the campaign by donating a minimum of $20 to Komen Houston, supporting the nonprofit in their efforts to fund the screening, treatment and support of local breast cancer patients.

From that donation, donors will receive an email that includes a free Monthly Membership to Houston BCycle–which allows one person unlimited hour-long rides to and from all 72 stations in the city’s network.

Ginny Kirklin, Senior Director of Community Programs and Partnerships at Komen Houston said the partnership is a great way to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and brings to light each nonprofit’s shared mission.

“Komen Houston is thrilled to partner with Houston BCycle, an organization dedicated to healthy living and personal wellness,” said Kirklin. “According to the American Cancer Society, just two and a half hours of physical activity each week can lower overall cancer risk. Pedal for the Cure gives donors the opportunity to not only contribute to our local fight against breast cancer, but also, take preventative health measures and practice an active lifestyle by choosing BCycle as a way to get around our city.”

“When someone uses bike share, they’re not only taking the fun travel option, they’re also engaging in a preventative health measure,” said Beth Martin, Executive Director of Houston BCycle. “As a health-focused organization, we are honored that ‘Pedal for the Cure’ donations will support Komen Houston’s groundbreaking cancer research and treatment.”

Pedal for the Cure will launch in October and run through April 2019.
