Houston honors veterans throughout the city on Veteran’s Day

Houston Salutes Veterans Day Celebration and 9/11 Heroes Run on Saturday, November 11 from  8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

In honor of Houston’s veterans, first responders, and volunteers who have led Houston’s recovery efforts from Hurricane Harvey, Mayor Sylvester Turner will host the annual “Houston Salutes American Heroes” Veterans Day Celebration and the Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run on Saturday, November 11, 2017.

The celebration will begin at 8 a.m. with the nationally recognized Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run, originally scheduled for 9/9/17. The salute continues with the AARP Veterans Job & Resource Fair starting at 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. in Hermann Square at City Hall. Symbols of Freedom, presented by Wells Fargo, will feature military exhibits at City Hall.

The traditional Veterans Day Ceremony presented by H-E-B will begin at 10:00 a.m. on the steps of City Hall with a 21-Gun Salute. The ceremony will end at 11 a.m. with a moment of silence in memory of the signing of the WWI Armistice. Don Nelson, retired military and formerly with ABC13, will emcee the ceremony.

All proceeds from registration (excluding costs) will be donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

Veterans & Current Military to receive free meal at Greater Houston Area McDonald’s restaurants on Veterans Day: 

Participating McDonald’s restaurants in the Greater Houston Area will honor military servicemen and servicewomen with a free Extra Value Meal this Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11. Veterans and current members of the military are invited to enjoy their free meal by visiting participating restaurants and showing their Military ID.

The offer can be redeemed for an Extra Value Meal, which includes favorites like the Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Big Mac, and Filet-o-Fish and comes with medium Fries and your choice of soft drink. Breakfast Extra Value Meals, like the Egg McMuffin and Sausage Burrito, come with Hash Browns and a small McCafé coffee. No coupon necessary. Limit one meal per serviceman or servicewoman on Veterans Day only. Dine-in only. Some exclusions apply.

In addition to offering a free meal in restaurants on Veterans Day, the McDonald’s Owner/Operators Association of Greater Houston will serve hundreds of free sandwiches at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Veterans Day Program on Thursday, November 9.

Levy Park Conservancy to Host Veterans Day Festival for All Ages with Chef Tim Love will be on hand, along with music and activities  

The Levy Park Conservancy (LPC) presents a Veterans Day celebration at Levy Park on Saturday, Nov. 11 from noon – 8 p.m. with food and beverages and activities for children and adults alike. Texas-based celebrity chef Tim Love and his team are providing food for the entire weekend at the park starting Friday from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Live musical entertainment from Houston Blues Society bands kicks off at 12:30 with James and the Classix, playing until 3 p.m. The Keisha Pratt Band comes on at 3:15 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Bryan Shane Band will provide a country music vibe from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. All will perform on the Pavilion Stage.

However, guests are invited to come out earlier in the day to enjoy a good workout with Boot Camp at 8:30 a.m. and then yoga at 10 a.m.  Some of the delicious food provided by Tim Love includes brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, pork bahn mi tacos, kimchi dog, “kick ass” nachos, hot dogs, crispy Brussels sprouts and a variety of beverages, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Come and get a taste of Chef Love’s offerings all weekend long.

Levy Park is located in the heart of the Upper Kirby District at 3801 Eastside St., between Buffalo Speedway and Kirby Drive and Richmond Avenue and U.S. 59. Parking is available on Wakeforest and Eastside streets and in the parking garage for a fee.
