The Secret Garden makes debut at Hobby Center with Theatre Under the Stars

Houston audiences will get a treat as theatrical talent from across the country will converge on our city to bring the 5th Avenue Theatre Company and the Shakespeare Theatre Company co-production of THE SECRET GARDEN presented by Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS).

THE SECRET GARDEN is a musical based on the 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The musical’s script and lyrics are by Marsha Norman with music by Lucy Simon. Premiering in 1991 on Broadway, it ran for 709 performances.

The show will run from October 10-22 in Sarofim Hall at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts and kick off the TUTS 2017-18 Season.

The story is set in the early years of the 20th century. Mary Lennox, a young English girl born and raised in the British Raj, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is ten years old. She is sent away from India to Yorkshire, England, to live with relatives whom she has never met. Her own personality blossoms as she and a young gardener bring new life to a neglected garden, as well as to her sickly cousin and uncle.

TUTS has the honor of participating in this pre-Broadway co-production of the Tony® Award winning musical. This production, which just broke box office records in Washington D.C., will include revisions to the book and score made by 5th Ave. Theatre’s Artistic Director, David Armstrong and the original creative team.

Starring in the roles of Mary Lennox and Archibald Craven are Bea Corley and Jeremy Kushnier.

Corley is a talented young actress who made her 5th Avenue Theatre debut in the role. Corley has appeared in regional theatre productions including CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, SHREK and LES MISERABLES.

Kushnier has appeared on Broadway in Cirque du Soleil’s PARAMOUR, FOOTLOOSE, RENT, and the 2012 revival of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.  Josh Young, whose credits include EVITA, LES MISERABLES, and his 2012 Tony AwardⓇ nominated performance in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, will appear as Dr. Neville Craven.
