Ronald McDonald House breaks ground on Holcombe House Renovation and 20-Bedroom Expansion

Celebrating the future of Ronald McDonald House Houston begins with groundbreaking ceremony

Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Houston began the process of their 20-bedroom expansion and renovation of their 50-bedroom Holcombe House flagship facility on September 12, 2017.

The ceremony celebrated the three-phase transformational construction project, which includes the creation of a new two-story tower containing 20 additional bedrooms (increasing the Holcombe House capacity by 40%); and a complete renovation of existing common areas, including upgrades to the high-use kitchen and a fully reconfigured intake area with private, comfortable spaces for children and their families.

The three part renovation project is funded by the Behind Every Door campaign. Launched in 2015, the campaign was designed to raise funds for the $22.5 million expansion and renovation of Holcombe House.

Community and business leaders, including Rhonda Skillern-Jones, HISD Board of Education Trustee, and Representative Sarah Davis, celebrated the milestone at a groundbreaking ceremony on the construction site at Holcombe House.

According to Rick Noreiga, CEO of RMH Houston, the renovation and expansion will allow them to better serve families in need as well as serve 40 percent more families than before at their flagship facility. Currently, Holcombe House operates consistently at full capacity.

For 20 years, the Holcombe House has seen high-volume use 24/7, 365 days each year, by almost 600 families a year, resulting in natural, but visible wear and tear with an evolving need for a reconfigured floor plan with open areas that foster community among resident families, as well as additional private, comfortable spaces to better facilitate the exchange of personal information. 

Construction for Phase I and II commenced in June 2017, led by W.S. Bellows Construction Corporation.
